FIFA World Cup

The world number one, most popular international tournament the FIFA World Cup, which is also called as Football World Cup, but usually referred to simply as the World Cup, is an international football competition. The FIFA World Cup is contested by the member nations of Federation International de Football Association (FIFA). Every member nation plays with their own men's national team. The FIFA is the highest global governing body of association football and it was founded in Paris on 21 May 1904. The headquarters of FIFA are situated in Zurich, Switzerland, and its current president is Sepp Blatter. Football's all major international tournaments are organized and governances by FIFA and FIFA most notably organized and governances the FIFA World Cup, held since 1930.

The organizer of Football World Cup Tournament i.e. FIFA has 208 member associations, which is 16 more than the United Nations member associations and three more than the International Olympic Committees member associations but five fewer than the International Association of Athletics Federations.

The FIFA World Cup championship is recognized as greatest show on the earth. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930. but due  World War II Football World Cup 1942 and 1946 dropped by FIFA.

In the present day the tournament involves 32 national teams competing for the winner title at the host nation(s) venues. Today the World Cup is celebrated as festival which is come in an interval of four year and it is celebrated over a period of about a month. Though FIFA has 208 member associations, all of the member associations can’t play the tournament together with the host nation(s). Out of 208 only 32 national teams can play the greatest show on the earth. To satisfy the member associations FIFA implement some rules, to qualify for the Football World Cup Tournament member associations have to go through a qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years. This qualification phase is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s). The World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world. The Football World Cup Tournament  2006 was watched by minimum 715.1 million people all over the world.

Till now 18 final tournaments held and out of 208 member associations only seven nations have won the title. The national team of Brazil is the only team that has played in every tournament and has won the World Cup a record of five times. The national team of Italy is the current champions and has won four titles, and the team of Germany is next with three. The other former champion national teams are from Uruguay, the winners of the inaugural tournament, and Argentina, with two titles each, and England and France, with one title each.

World Cup Past and Present

Scotland and England are the countries, who play the world's first international football match played in Glasgow in 1872. it was also the first international tournament. The match between Scotland and England was the inaugural edition of the British Home Championship, taking place in 1884. During the earlier time the match was limited within the United Kingdom. At the beginning of 1900 century the football getting more and more popularity in whole world. At early stage the match was held as a demonstration sport. No medal was awarded in between 1900 and 1904 in this type of match.

It was the FIFA, who made a decision to organized football tournament in Switzerland in 1906 between the nations which are outside of the Olympic framework. This was regarded as Pillar of international football tournament. However FIFA officially describes the competition as having been a failure. These were very early days for international football history.

During the Summer Olympics held in London in 1908 the Football Association (FA) gave football competition an official status. The Football Association (FA) is  England's football governing body. The event was played by amateur players only. This event was just like a show only. The national team of England won the gold medal of the event. In 1912 Swedish Football Association organize this tournament in Stockholm where England again won the gold medal.

At starting moment FIFA does not recognize the Olympic tournament, but in 1914, FIFA recognize this as a "world football championship for amateurs" and not only this they took responsibility for managing the event. Actually this was the mile stone of World Football. Due to this, at the1920 Summer Olympics, the football competition was contested by Egypt and thirteen European teams. The 1920 Summer Olympics’ football competition was won by Belgium. But 1924 and 1928 Uruguay won the Olympic football tournaments

FIFA, President of that time Jules Rimet got an idea from Olympic football tournaments, he looking at staging their own international football tournament outside the Olympics, because at that time Olympic football tournaments got huge success. On 28 May 1928, the FIFA Congress held in Amsterdam announced to start their own international football tournament. FIFA announced Uruguay as the host country of the inaugural World Cup tournament which was going to be held in 1930. Uruguay won the winner title of 1930 World Cup tournament.

The last World Cup was held in Germany in 2006 and the title was won by Italy. So upto 2010 Italy will known as World Champion. The next World Cup will be held in South Africa. The world most popular game will be held there in between 11 June and 11 July 2010, and the 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil.

Trophy

The winner of Football World Cup Tournament is awarded with trophy from FIFA. At the early stage of the tournament the trophy of FIFA was named as the World Cup or Coupe du Monde. But in 1946 FIFA committee renamed the trophy as Jules Rimet , to give honour to their former president Jules Rimet for his afford to make first Football World Cup Tournament. This trophy was awarded from 1930 to 1970. In 1970 Brazil won the FIFA World Cup tournament for third time, due to this the FIFA committee entitled them to keep the trophy permanently. Unfortunately the trophy was stolen from Brazil in 1983 and this trophy has never been recovered as the thieves melted down the trophy.

After FIFA committee entitled Brazil to keep the original trophy permanently, in 1970 a new Trophy was designed known as the FIFA World Cup Trophy. The designer of the Trophy was Silvio Gazzaniga, he was a Italian designer. The new trophy is 36 cm (14.2 in) high, made of solid 18 carat (75%) gold and weighs 6.175 kg (13.6 lb). The base contains two layers of semi-precious malachite. The bottom side of the trophy bears the engraved year and name of each FIFA World Cup winner since 1974. The description of the trophy by Gazzaniga was: "The lines spring out from the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world. From the remarkable dynamic tensions of the compact body of the sculpture rise the figures of two athletes at the stirring moment of victory."

After 1970, FIFA committee decided not to award the original Trophy permanently. The winners of Football World Cup Tournament retain the Trophy until the next Football World Cup tournament and rather than the solid gold original trophy, the winners are awarded a gold-plated replica.

Awards

At the end of each Football World Cup Tournament, awards are presented to the players and teams for accomplishments other than their final team positions in the tournament. There are currently six awards are presented to the players and teams and these are:

• The Golden Ball (currently commercially termed "adidas Golden Ball") for best player;

• The Golden Shoe (also known as the Golden Boot, since 1982 commercially termed "adidas Golden Shoe") was first awarded in 1930 for top goal scorer;

• The Yashin Award for best goalkeeper (first awarded in 1994);

• The Best Young Player (currently commercially termed as "Gillette Best Young Player") award for best player under 21 years of age at the start of the calendar year, first awarded in 2006.

• The FIFA Fair Play Trophy for the team with the best record of fair play (first awarded in 1970);

• The Most Entertaining Team award for the team that has entertained the public the most, during the World Cup final tournament, as determined by a poll of the general public, first awarded in 1994;

An All-Star Team (currently commercially termed "Mastercard All-Star Team") comprising of the best players of the tournament, is also announced for each tournament since 1990.
